How do I set up Crops?

Overview:

Within AgStudio, products include Crops, Commodities, Seed, Biosolids, Chemicals, and Amendments.

By default, AgStudio already contains an extensive USDA crop list. This article describes how to add and edit crops to be used in a specific domain and crop year.

*Only users with Administrative privileges can actually create a crop.*

Details about all aspects of the Crop Editor are available in the embedded Help files within the extension.

Requirements:

• It is suggested practice to setup these Crops in AgStudio before setting up Commodities.  Commodities can then be linked to the correct Crop, creating less confusion down the line.

Process:

It is suggested to add Crops first to the Entire Database (highest Domain).  From there specific Crops can be added to Growers as needed.

1. From the Setup menu, select Crops to display the Crop Editor in which you add the crops you work with from a pre-defined USDA crop list.
2. In the Crop Editor, be sure to set the Domain to Entire Database and the Crop Year to the crop year in which you want to add crops.   
3. To Add a New Crop, click "Add" to bring up a pre-defined list of Crops AgStudio contains.
4. Scroll through the list to select the correct Crop and Click "OK", if unsure, you can click "Preview" to see properties.
5. If the Crop you need is not on that list, click "New Crop" to bring up Crop Properties.   
6. Standard information AgStudio will need for proper Crop setup are Name and ID (usually the same), a USDA crop, and USDA crop type.
7. Other information like application rate (for planting), Min and Max planting rate, and Growth Stages (for Tissue Sampling). **Growth Stages can be edited only on the highest domain.   
8. For the crops you added, select the crop in the grid and click "Edit" to provide details including: USDA Crop Name, USDA Crop Type, Rates, and Growth Stages.
9. Upon adding and defining the crops to the Entire Database, you want to change the Domain within the Crop Editor to the Grower you are defining and to the crop year in which you are working. You would then click “Add” and a crop list including the crops you added will populate.  You can use the filter to narrow your search by crops.   
10. Select the Crop you want to add to the specific grower and click "OK".  That crop will then be added to that specific Grower.

Note: The Crop Editor works under the assumption that one crop (the item you plant; for example, Corn) can grow many commodities (what you harvest; for example, corn grain or corn silage).
